In 1933 Willy Lloyd founded WSL for the purpose for trading general produce such as feathers, egg products and vegetable oils with China. In the early 1960s, in a fast changing world and with expansion in mind the company began to utilise their large numbers of existing contacts and wider international links were forged.

WSL began supplying and distributing a greater range of vegetable oils from producing countries across the globe and set about building the international trading company that it is today. From those early days to present the company has never forgotten it's early links in China, and is today still a specialist supplier and distributor of technical vegetable oils from mainland China.

Based in the UK the company's principle area for the distribution of oils and related products has long been in Europe, but today WSL trades worldwide with subsidiary companies and representative offices in Canada, Russia and South Africa.

The current Chairman, Mike Smith - a director since 1962, has shaped the company's development for the last 39 years. He comments:

"WSL has always taken pride in the fact that we are a small company and the only long established UK privately owned company in the business. As a result, we can cut through the bureaucracy that so often surrounds decision-making.   We have the proven experience and background to offer our clients an efficient, personal service at a fair price.

Many of our clients are blue-chip household names who value our commitment to providing them with goods on time and to budget.

Our aim has always been straightforward - to provide each of our customers with the reliable, cost effective service that befits our reputation"

The current Managing Director, Nigel Smith, continues to operate the company using the established philosophy of customer care being central to everything - this ethos is reflected throughout all aspects of the company's operations.

Worldwide price fluctuation is also a major driver for the company and relationships with processors across the globe guarantee adaptability on costs.  This approach ensures that WSL stays competitive worldwide as they remain alert to the most competitive source of crude oil - it also ensures that they are never reliant on one source alone. In addition this networking policy allows them to identify new trends and opportunities as they arise and which they can then quickly adapt to the benefit of their established client base.

Points for both bulk and dry storage are selected for their geographical location and an ability to remain flexible and responsive to customer demands.

WSL's UK processing plant is located on the River Thames.  The liquid storage in the Dagenham docks allows access to more than 100 storage tanks ranging from 50m3 to 20,000m3.

With its deep water jetty, ocean going vessels are loaded or discharged with ease, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Overnight loading of road tankers or filling of drums allows delivery with very little notice, and the on-site laboratory provides the assurance of quality conformance prior to release. Similar facilities are utilized in Rotterdam and Durban.

Selection of hauliers is governed by their attention to service, product and quality awareness as well as cost. All have many years of proven expertise, and none forget the WSL rule that no matter what comes last, the client comes first.
